In-Office Procedures Q & A

Why have an in-office gynecology procedure?

Sometimes, you may need to address a woman’s health condition with a medical procedure. Doing so usually requires a trip to the hospital, which can be expensive and inconvenient.

Instead, Miami Women Care provides a number of in-office procedures, saving you the inconvenience and expense of going to the hospital for surgery and avoiding the risks associated with general anesthesia.

What in-office procedures are available?

Dr. Karmin and Miami Women Care’s highly trained team provide some of the most common women’s health procedures in-office, including:

  • Hysteroscopy
  • Colposcopy and LEEP
  • Endometrial ablation
  • Hysteroscopic removal of fibroids and polyps
  • FemTouch™ vaginal rejuvenation

The practice also offers local anesthesia and sedation to ensure you’re comfortable while having an in-office procedure.

What is the FemTouch in-office vaginal rejuvenation procedure?

FemTouch™ is a CO2 laser therapy to address issues with vaginal health, such as vaginal atrophy and dryness, painful intercourse, and urinary incontinence. The laser stimulates cellular renewal and remodeling in your vaginal tissues to improve sensation, tone, and lubrication. The therapy also may significantly improve the symptoms of urinary incontinence among women who leak urine while coughing, sneezing, or during exercise.

Dr. Karmin can perform the FemTouch™ at Miami Women Care in about 15 minutes. Your treatment requires no anesthesia or post-treatment care. It’s typically recommended to have three treatments for optimal results.

What is hysteroscopy?

Miami Women Care offers in-office hysteroscopy to diagnose the causes of abnormal bleeding and other gynecologic conditions. The same procedure also can address polyps, fibroids, and other endometrial abnormalities.

What is hysteroscopic removal of uterine fibroids and polyps?

Hysteroscopic removal of fibroids and/or polyps involves the use of a hysteroscope, a slim lighted camera that gives Dr. Karmin an up-close view of your uterus. State-of-the-art equipment can be passed through the camera to remove the fibroids or polyps that may be contributing to a patient’s symptoms. Dr. Karmin inserts these instruments into the uterus through the vagina, avoiding the need for incisions in your abdomen. With the use of oral medications and local anesthesia, the procedure is typically not painful and can achieve the same results as similar procedures performed in a hospital setting.

What is endometrial ablation?

Endometrial ablation is an in-office treatment for heavy periods that uses radiofrequency energy to treat the lining of your uterus. Miami Women Care provides prefers NovaSure® endometrial ablation, a quick procedure that uses radiofrequency energy. which has been shown to be over 90% successful in reducing or eliminating heavy or abnormal bleeding. Because the procedure is done in the office with minimal sedation and local anesthesia, return to normal activities is quick and patients have very little downtime.

What is a colposcopy?

A colposcopy is an in-office procedure performed to further evaluate an abnormal Pap smear. During the procedure, Dr. Karmin uses a special microscope, called a colposcope, to examine the cervix more closely. Usually, very small tissue biopsies are sent for evaluation in a lab. This is typically a very fast procedure that is not painful.

In rare situations, biopsy results from a colposcopy will indicate that there are precancerous cells that are significant enough that the removal of those cells is recommended. In those circumstances, Dr. Karmin will recommend a LEEP procedure. To perform this procedure, Dr. Karmin uses a very thin loop device to remove a slightly larger piece of the cervix where the abnormal cells are located. The procedure is done in the office using local anesthesia and patients can usually return to work in the same day.
